Make the Best In You Possible
I am reading a book called Creativity, Inc. by Ed Catmull (President of Pixar Animation and Disney Animation). I am enjoying it and its many good ideas and observations about an environment of creativity. Certainly Catmull has worked in a creative environment having produced amazing films like Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc. and The Incredibles to mention a few.
He sums up what the book is about in the Introduction by saying that “It is an expression of the ideas that I believe make the best in us possible.” That brought up a question for me.
What is the best possible in us/me? Is the best in us measured by what we can achieve or is it the capacity for experience itself, experience that is naturally both rich and profound? Many people think that the answer is achievement oriented – how do I measure up to others.
I think the best in me is not fundamentally about my achievements but about my experience. Did the people at Pixar in making Toy Story bring out a higher quality of themselves than I did years ago when I was running my moderately successful restaurant out on Cape Cod or the other day when I was playing soccer out in the back yard with my grandkids – both of which I felt were incredibly rich and profound experiences? Is the best in us/me measured by what we achieve or by our actual feelings in an experience?
For Dreambounded Leaders, energy and specifically resonant energy is what makes the best in us possible. Energy makes the best in us possible because of its essential quality, and therefore possibility, of resonance or being in sync with each other and the world around us.
Ideas often have us fighting with each other (or ourselves) about who is right in the belief that an idea can be a reliable guide – a guide that we hold onto for guidance even when we are clearly not in sync with each other or ourselves. Did the Pixar Team or anyone on the team work so long and hard on the film that they sacrificed their health or family relationships in favor of the idea of creating a film that won big at the box office?
Ideas are never more than created resources and as such, they can not guide and therefore, can not make the best in us possible. Dreambounded Leaders look for resonance to guide them knowing that being in sync or resonance isn’t something that you work towards and hopefully achieve. Rather it is something you choose, always right now, as your guide. Summed up: if it doesn’t feel right (resonate), allowing it to guide you will NOT make the best in you possible.
Resonance makes the best in you possible.
